There shall be a town sergeant who shall be
appointed by the mayor to serve at the pleasure of the mayor. The
town sergeant shall have all the powers, privileges and immunities
of his office and shall perform all the duties as prescribed by the
general laws and applicable special laws and ordinances. He shall
receive such compensation as is fixed by ordinance.
There may be if necessary, one or more auctioneers
appointed by the mayor to serve at the pleasure of the mayor. Every
auctioneer shall at his own expense give bond in a sum not exceeding
ten thousand dollars nor less than two thousand dollars for the faithful
execution of the duties of his office according to law. The powers
and procedure of said office shall be as prescribed by law.
There shall be a town sealer of weights and
measures appointed by the mayor to serve at the pleasure of the mayor.
The powers and procedure of said office shall be as prescribed by
law. His compensation shall be fixed by ordinance.
In accordance with general laws of Rhode Island,
1956, [section] 30-15-8, with the approval of the governor of the
state, the town council is authorized to establish a local council
of defense. The members of the council of defense shall be appointed
by the mayor and shall serve at his pleasure.
There may be established a parks and recreation
commission as is authorized by law. If it is established, the town
council shall by ordinance specify the number of members on said commission
or board of recreation, the manner of their appointment and the term
for which they are chosen and may provide that a member of the school
committee, a member of the town council and a member from the department
of public works designated by the director of said department in said
town shall be ex officio members of said parks and recreation commission.
The members of said commission shall serve without compensation. They
shall have no authority to spend any money or to contract any indebtedness
for or on account of said town other than such money as shall be appropriated
and placed at their disposal by the town council for the purposes
prescribed by law, or by ordinance of the town council.
There shall be other offices of the town as
may be established by ordinance.
