The City Physician shall be a graduate of a legally incorporated
medical school, and shall be licensed to practice medicine within
the commonwealth. It shall be preferred but not required that the
City Physician be a resident of the City.

The City Physician shall have superintendence and supervision
over the work of the Assistant City Physicians if any are appointed.
He shall be the City Infirmary Physician and, at the request of the
Commission of Public Welfare, shall visit and prescribe for all the
needy sick within the City receiving assistance under Chapter 117
of the General Laws. He shall render such professional assistance
to the Director of Public Health as the latter shall request. He shall
vaccinate, free of charge, all persons sent to him by the Commissioner
of Public Welfare for that purpose, and all pupils of the public schools
sent to him for that purpose by the School Committee or Superintendent
of Schools. He shall, when requested by the Mayor, the Committee on
Public Safety, the Chief of Police or the Fire Chief of the Fire Department,
make an examination of the condition of police officers or firemen
absent from duty by reason of sickness or disability. When requested
by the Mayor, the City Council, the City Solicitor or the Chairman
of the Committee on Claims and Licenses, he shall examine any person
who purports to have a personal injury claim against the City. At
the request of the Chief of Police or officer in charge at police
headquarters, he shall attend any person at such police headquarters
who may require medical or surgical attendance. He shall, annually,
in January, report to the city council concerning the professional
services rendered during the preceding year, and make such suggestions
as he may deem proper. He shall also perform such other duties as
are imposed upon him by ordinance.

The mayor may at any time, if in his judgment the same are necessary,
or to meet an exigency which may arise, appoint not more than two
assistant city physicians for such period as he shall deem necessary,
but for no period longer than the term of the city physician. Each
such assistant shall possess the qualifications required of the city
physician. Under the superintendence of the city physician, each such
assistant shall perform such duties as the city physician may require
of him or direct him to perform. Any assistant city physician appointed
under this section may be removed by the mayor at his pleasure and
shall be so removed if the exigency for which he was appointed shall
have ceased.
