laid for the purpose of fighting a fire, except with the permission
and direction of the Fire Chief or Acting Fire Chief.

use diligence in ascertaining that the highway is clear as they proceed
to cross.

a perceptible grade, turning the wheels of such vehicle toward the
curbside of the street or highway.
