The purpose of this Chapter is to establish a standard for design
professionals and utility companies to follow for the installation
of underground utilities within the City limits of Hollister.

As used in this Chapter, the following terms shall have these
prescribed meanings:
CONDUIT
A tube or duct to enclose wires or cables.
LINES
Either direct burial type of mains or conduit.
MAINS
Principal pipes or conduits in a system for conveying a utility
to customer point of service.
PIPE
Cylinder duct or tube for conveying fluids or a gas.
UTILITY
Cable, communications, electric, gas, sewer, water.

Detectable Warning Tape. Acid and alkali-resistant
polyethylene film warning tape manufactured for marking and identifying
underground utilities shall be used in all installations of underground
utilities in the City of Hollister. This warning tape shall be a minimum
six (6) inches wide and four (4) mils thick, continuously inscribed
with a description of the utility, with metallic core encased in a
protective jacket for corrosion protection, detectable by metal detector
when tape is buried up to thirty (30) inches deep. The warning tape
is to be placed at least six (6) inches above the utility pipe/conduit
being marked but no less than twelve (12) inches below surface grade.
An insulated copper tracer wire no smaller than eighteen (18) AWG
may also be required by the utility company, Public Service Commission
rules or other codes when non-metallic pipe is used. The insulation on the tracer wires must follow the color
code as for tape. The tape shall be colored as follows to comply with
State regulations:
Red:

Water mains, sewer mains and gas mains shall be installed in
trenches of adequate depth to protect them from freezing and physical
damage. Protection from physical damage is achieved through proper
installation. All pipes shall be placed on bedding material of granular
aggregate no larger than three-quarter (¾) inch diameter stone.
The depth of the bedding material in any trench shall be at least
six (6) inches deep but no less than one-fourth (¼) the diameter
of the pipe. Rock removal: where rock is encountered in trenching,
the rock shall be removed to a minimum depth of six (6) inches below
the installation level of the bottom of the pipe, and the trench backfilled
with bedding material to the installation level of the bottom of the
pipe. Cover material over the pipe shall be the same three-quarter
(¾) inch maximum diameter aggregate and there shall be at least
twelve (12) inches of cover over the top of the pipe. Backfill placed
on top of the cover shall have no stone/rock larger than twelve (12)
inch diameter.

A. Minimum
separation distances shall be maintained between water mains, sewer
mains, gas mains and electrical conduits as follows:
1. Water separated from sewer:
Ten (10) feet horizontally separated by undisturbed soil.
Eighteen (18) inches vertically preferably water over sewer
or else
Encasement as approved by MDNR and City.
2. Water separated from electric mains:
Five (5) feet of separation horizontally and vertically or
Twelve (12) inches with a three (3) inch slab/wall of concrete.
3. Sewer separated from electric mains:
Three (3) feet of separation horizontally and vertically or
Twelve (12) inches with a three (3) inch slab/wall of concrete.
4. Gas main separated from electric mains:
Five (5) feet of separation horizontally and vertically or
Twelve (12) inches with a three (3) inch slab/wall of concrete.
5. Water separated from gas main:
Ten (10) feet of separation horizontally.
Vertical eighteen (18) inches with a three (3) inch slab of
concrete.
6. Sewer separated from gas mains:
Five (5) feet of separation horizontally or
Vertical eighteen (18) inches with a three (3) inch slab of
concrete.
7. Communications, cable, phone, fiber separated from water or sewer:
Five (5) feet radially.
8. Minimum separation from any utility to back of curb:
Five (5) feet.
