Except as otherwise provided by law, no person shall be eligible
or appointed to any board or committee of the Township of Washington
if they have made a claim or are a party to a lawsuit against the
Township or any of its officers or employees in the preceding five
years. Each member shall also be a resident of the Township of Washington
for a period of one year unless otherwise allowed by law and shall
not be in violation of any local ordinances or codes. No member of
a board or committee shall receive any compensation or thing of value
for their service as all such positions are volunteer.
Each member appointed to a board or committee of the Township
of Washington shall:
A. Comply with all the requirements of the Local Government Ethics Law.
B. Act in a manner that enhances the integrity of the board or committee.
C. Not gain an improper advantage through information derived from their
association with the board or committee.
D. Respect the confidentiality of the board or committee and not provide
information received through their role as a member that is not available
to the general public unless prior written authorization is given
for its release by an authorized official of the Township.
E. When interacting with the public, press or other entity, shall emphasize
that they do not speak for or on behalf of the board or the Township
unless specifically designated to do so by the board or the Township.
F. Be informed about the board's mission, services, policies and
programs.
G. Prepare for board and committee meetings by reviewing the meeting
agenda and supporting materials.
H. Comply with all conflict of interest, confidentiality and ethics
policies.
I. Not obtain a personal advantage or benefit due to membership on any
board or committee or relationships established by any other board
or committee member.
J. Fulfill a full and active role in the work of the board or committee
and act in good faith and in the best interests of the board or committee
or the Township at all times.
K. Promote an inclusive and diverse culture in the board or committee
and help create an environment where different perspectives and backgrounds
are encouraged and valued.
L. Not act in a way that unjustifiably favors or discriminates against
any individuals or interests.
M. Respect the principle of collective decisionmaking, which means that
once a decision has been made the members should support that decision,
and not use or attempt to use the opportunity of board membership
to promote any personal interests or those of any related person,
firm or other organization.
N. Comply with the Township's social media policy.
O. Remain politically impartial with respect to their role as a board
member.
P. Not accept any gifts or hospitality which might or might reasonably
appear to compromise their personal judgment or integrity as a board
or committee member.
Q. Not use information gained during their board or committee membership
for personal gain or political purpose.
Any member of a board or committee that violates these rules
and regulations shall be subject to removal, suspension or otherwise
as set forth in the Local Government Ethics Law.
