[Adopted as part of Ch. 2 of the 1963 City Code (Ch. 2, Art. XII, of the 1980 Code)]
The City Engineer shall have the charge and custody of, and shall keep in convenient form, properly classified and indexed maps, plans and surveys of all streets, ways, sidewalks, bridges, landings, sewers, drains, dams and reservoirs and other public lands or works belonging to the City and shall duly and promptly deliver the same to his successor in office.

The City Engineer shall enter, keep and alphabetically arrange a record of the names of all highways, streets, avenues, lanes, alleys, ways and squares which have been or shall hereafter be laid out and established or accepted by the City Council or by or for the City, together with the dates of such laying out and establishment or acceptance, the boundaries and measurements thereof and all alterations therein from time to time made, the names of the owners of the land, if known, over or through which the highways, streets, avenues, lanes, alleys, ways and squares are located and the estates abutting and bounding thereon.
The City Engineer shall assign street numbers to all dwellings, tenements and buildings in the City as provided in § 125-1 of this Code, and shall keep a record of such assigned street numbers either on maps or plans or in some other proper and convenient manner.
The City Engineer shall keep a record of all sidewalks that are now or may hereafter be laid out and established by the City Council or by and for the City, and of the width, height and grade of the same, stating the boundaries and measurements thereof, together with the date of such laying out and establishment, and including a record of all assessments therefor.
The City Engineer shall keep a record of all sewers and drains that are now or may hereafter be constructed or accepted by the City, together with their location, grade, structural character, dimensions, outlets, connections and the dates of their construction and acceptance, and including a record of all assessments made therefor.

The City Engineer shall prepare all surveys, plans and specifications necessary for carrying out the street work and the votes and orders of the City Council relative thereto; for the construction of new sewers and drains or the repair or alteration of old sewers and drains; for the taking of land by the City Council for any municipal purpose; and he shall make all surveys, measurements, plans, levels and estimates and perform such other duties as may be required of him by the Mayor or other authorized officer or board.

The City Engineer shall make plans for and supervise the building of all dams, bridges and other engineering structures that may be built by the City.[1]

The City Engineer shall prepare for the Assessor of Taxes, annually or at such times as the Assessor shall require, all plans and maps necessary for the purposes of valuing and assessing real estate in the City.
The City Engineer shall, under the direction of the City Solicitor, take views and prepare plans of the location of all accidents alleged to have taken place on public property or public ways, for which claims for damages are or may be brought against the City, and shall assist in the investigation of such alleged accidents in such other manner as may properly and reasonably be required.
The City Engineer shall give to all applicants therefor, so far as the files and records of his office will permit, any information they may request concerning the proper grades and lines of the streets or ways on which their estates may be situated or on which they may intend to build.[1]

The office of the City Engineer shall constitute a part of the office of the City Clerk, a part of the office of the Assessor of Taxes and a part of the office of any other officer or board of the City for the purpose of filing for record any map, plan, survey, print or other record which may be more conveniently kept or referred to in the office of the City Engineer.
The office of Assistant City Engineer is hereby established, and he shall be appointed in conformity with the provisions of the City Charter. The Assistant City Engineer shall receive such compensation for his services as the City Council may determine and provide. He shall perform all such duties as thereto directed by the City Engineer.
