The Town Board does hereby determine that the enumeration of all buildings
in the Town of Southport in a manner which will facilitate the location of
buildings along the roads, highways and public right-of-ways by fire, police
and other emergency services is of major importance to the Town of Southport.

is compatible with and enhances the establishment and operation of a county-wide
emergency 911 telephone system is also of major importance to the Town of
Southport. This chapter is intended to serve these purposes.

shall have displayed either upon the building or upon an acceptable freestanding
display post or similar fixture located within the front yard of said building
an assigned number that uniquely identifies the building's location upon that
particular road, highway, or other public right-of-way. Only one principal
building upon any individual parcel shall be required to have and display
the assigned number.
Each owner, lessee, occupant, or agent of the same, of every building
shall cause the same to be numbered, and the number to be displayed, in accordance
with this chapter.

Any building for which a certificate of occupancy is issued after the effective date of this chapter must display the assigned number prior to the issuance of a certificate of occupancy.
The Code Enforcement Officer shall be responsible for the enforcement
of this chapter. In instances of unique practical difficulties presented by
individual properties, the Code Enforcement Officer shall have authority to
vary the specific standards for building enumeration described in this chapter
upon the advice of the Coordinator of Chemung County Enhanced 911 Emergency
Telephone Service.
