[HISTORY: Adopted by the Town Board of the Town of Southport (Appendix
2 of the 1975 Municipal Code). Amendments noted where applicable.]
The contractor will build portland cement sidewalk or asphaltic cement
sidewalk conforming to the standards of the Town of Southport for sidewalks,
and in conformance with line and grade designated by the Town Highway Superintendent.
The mix will be a "Six Bag Mix" (564 pounds of portland cement per cubic
yard of concrete) with an approved air-entraining agent added to give 4% to
7% entrained air. Aggregate will correspond to that in the current New York
State specifications for Item 18. Acceptable slump will be from 2 1/2
inches to 3 1/2 inches.
A.
Sidewalks shall be constructed on a well compacted and
graded granular subbase which shall be free of organic materials and at least
4 inches in depth. Sidewalks will be five inches in depth except in driveways
other than normal private driveways (i.e., commercial drives, alleys, parking
lot entrances.) At such places the walk will be six inches in depth. Sidewalk
will have the normal cross-slope of 1/4 inch per foot drop towards the street,
except where permission to alter the slope is given by the Highway Superintendent.
Dummy transverse joints shall be placed at five feet intervals and the joints
shall be finished with a scoring tool. At intervals of 25 feet the transverse
joint shall extend full depth and shall contain 1/2 inch pre-molded bituminous
joint material. The top surface should be scored at intervals of five feet
so that the finished walk will be marked in squares both longitudinally and
transversely.
B.
The concrete shall be laid in one course in acceptable
forms and shall be worked and floated so as to give a smooth uniform surface
free of holes and satisfactory to the Highway Superintendent. No concrete
shall be laid until the form installation and subbase preparation is inspected
and approved by the Town Highway Superintendent.
C.
Premoulded bituminous material and full joints shall
be placed at all points where sidewalks abut on curbs, pavements, buildings
or other structures. An acceptable tar paper will be placed between sidewalk
and telephone poles, meter posts, etc.
Either quilted covers, waterproof blankets or an approved sprayed or
painted curing compound may be used. Except when a curing compound approved
by the Town Highway Superintendent is used, sidewalks shall be cured for a
minimum of three days. In any case, traffic will be prohibited for at least
24 hours.
No portland cement concrete sidewalk work will be done after November
15 of the current year or before April 15 of the following year.
The material shall conform to the New York State Department of Public
Works Standards for Item 5 1A Hot Mix Asphaltic Concrete.
A.
Sidewalks shall be constructed on a well compacted and
graded granular base of at least four inches of item 4 conforming to New York
State Department of Public Works Standards.
B.
The asphaltic concrete shall be laid in two courses.
One binder course of two inches (compacted) and a top course of one inch (compacted).
Both courses shall be laid hot and compacted with a mechanical roller or vibratory
tamp.
C.
The sidewalk will be of four feet width laid true to
line and grade as given by Town Highway Superintendent with a normal cross-slope
of 1/4 inch per foot drop toward the street.
Metal edging is available for sidewalk work, but is not a requirement.
A.
Asphaltic concrete may be used for the construction of
a new sidewalk the entire width of the property or for the replacement of
the sidewalk in the driveway section.
B.
Existing concrete sidewalks in need of repair may be
so repaired by using an overlay of asphalt concrete with such specifications
as the Highway Superintendent may direct for such repair as the same may be
needed to meet the intent of these specifications.
