The Town Council shall increase or diminish the number of such police
officers, whenever and as often as the electors of the Town of Glocester qualified
to vote on any proposition to impose a tax for the expenditure of money shall,
at the annual Town Financial Meeting, vote that the number of the Town police
officers shall be increased or diminished, and shall appropriate the necessary
sum therefor; except that the Town Council can vote to increase the number
of permanent police officers if the Town has no direct financial responsibility
towards paying the salary or salaries of those new appointments, or if the
appointment of additional police officers does not exceed the current amount
appropriated to the Glocester Police Department by the duly-qualified electors
of the Town at the annual Town Financial Meeting.

Any police officer, as defined in RIGL 45-19-1, who shall be absent
from his/her regular employment as a police officer for a period of 12 months
by reason of injuries received or sickness contracted in the performance of
his/her duties shall be deemed physically unfit for duty and shall be required
to retire from the Department and will be entitled to retirement benefits
(if any) as may be available under applicable law. A police officer shall
immediately, upon the expiration of such twelve-month period, apply for disability
or regular retirement, as eligible. Said police officer shall pay to the Town
any retirement benefits received for the period from the date of application
to the date of termination of employment.
This article shall take effect upon passage by the Town Council and
shall apply to any “Injured On Duty Claims” filed prior to and
after the date of passage.
