The position of paid emergency medical technician is hereby created, ratified, and confirmed in the Borough of Maywood. The emergency medical technician may also be referred to as "EMT."
A. 
The Mayor shall appoint, with the consent of the Council, all paid emergency medical technicians, with consideration given to the recommendation of the Borough Administrator. All appointments are conditioned upon the satisfactory completion of the necessary training.
B. 
The paid emergency medical technicians shall serve as employees at will of the Borough.
A. 
To be eligible for appointment as a paid emergency medical technician, a person shall:
(1) 
Be a United States citizen or an alien authorized to work in the United States, and a resident of the State of New Jersey. Maywood residents will have preference for hiring purposes;
(2) 
Be of good moral character; be able to read, write, and speak the English language sufficiently to perform the duties of the position; and
(3) 
Be in good health, and sound in body and in mind, so that the applicant does not have any disabilities that would prevent him or her from satisfactorily performing the job duties described in § 46-60.
B. 
Each appointee shall be sworn to the faithful performance of the required duties.
The duties of the paid emergency medical technicians are as follows:
A. 
Respond to emergency medical calls during the hours of employment using the supplies, gear, and equipment of the Borough and the First Aid and Emergency Squad;
B. 
Cooperate with the First Aid and Emergency Squad members while making emergency calls; and
C. 
Perform any other duties that are assigned by the Borough Administrator.
Paid emergency medical technicians shall:
A. 
Adhere to and be governed by all the rules and regulations established by the Mayor and Council for the performance of the duties of emergency medical technicians;
B. 
Comply with all other applicable ordinances, rules and regulations adopted by the Mayor and Council; and
C. 
Be governed by all of the contents of the Borough's administrative manual and employee manual, where applicable.
Paid emergency medical technicians shall not be a part of nor in any way be deemed members of the Maywood First Aid and Emergency Squad, unless they volunteer for and are appointed to the Squad. Nothing shall preclude a paid emergency medical technician from becoming a member of the First Aid and Emergency Squad.
Each paid emergency medical technician shall be provided with and shall wear a uniform prescribed by the Mayor and Council.
Paid emergency medical technicians shall be employees at will. The Mayor and Council shall have the authority to summarily dismiss any paid emergency medical technicians for any reason the Mayor and Council finds sufficient. The Borough Administrator shall have the authority to discipline paid emergency medical technicians, including suspensions for up to three days, and to recommend that the Mayor and Council approve a longer suspension or dismissal, whenever it is found to be in the best interest of the Borough.
The terms of compensation for the paid emergency medical technicians shall be as set forth in the Borough's General Salary Ordinance.[1]
