The Chief of the Department shall preside at meetings of the Board of Fire Commissioners. In the absence of the Chief, the Assistant Chief shall preside. In the absence of the Assistant Chief, the Deputy Chief shall preside. In the absence of the Deputy Chief, the Battalion Chief shall preside.
In addition to the duties imposed upon the Chief of the Fire Department by the fire prevention ordinance[1] and other ordinances of the Borough, it shall be the duty of the Chief to take command of the Department at all times, to report monthly to the Mayor and Council, Manager and Borough Clerk: the condition of the various pieces of apparatus; equipment and appurtenance; the number of members in the Department by company; the resignation of members; the election of new members; and the expulsion of members passed upon by the Board of Fire Commissioners. The Chief shall be the chief executive officer of the Fire Department and shall have the authority to supervise and direct all Fire Department personnel in the best interest of the Department.

It shall be the duty of the Chief of the Fire Department to call out for drill one or more companies of the Department whenever he/she deems it necessary or advisable to ensure that all companies are maintained at the highest possible levels of excellence in the performance of their assigned duties. No drill, however, shall be called on legal holidays. Drills held during water restriction periods should be conducted in such a manner as not to hinder unnecessarily the operation of the Borough Water Department.
The Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief and Battalion Chief shall perform such duties as shall be assigned to him/her by the Chief and, in addition, shall perform all duties of the Chief in case of the absence or disability of the Chief. In the event of the death, resignation or removal of the Chief, the Assistant shall succeed to the office of Chief for the unexpired term. In the event of the death, resignation or removal of the Assistant Chief, the Deputy shall succeed to the office of Assistant Chief for the unexpired term. In the event of the death, resignation or removal of the Deputy Chief, the Battalion Chief shall succeed to the office of Deputy Chief for the unexpired term. In the event of the death, resignation, removal or promotion of the Battalion Chief, the Board of Fire Commissioners shall call a special election to fill the unexpired term of the Battalion Chief.
All Department Chiefs shall wear white helmets, white coats and standard Department-issued equipment.
