This article designates the requirements for asbestos cement sewer pipe manufactured for use as nonpressure lines in conveying sewage wastes toward disposal plants.
A. 
Classes. Asbestos-cement sewer pipe shall be manufactured in five strength classes, which shall be designated as Class 1500, Class 2400, Class 3300, Class 4000, and Class 5000.
B. 
Sizes. Asbestos-cement sewer pipe shall be manufactured with inside diameters of six, eight, 10, and 12 inches in Class 1500; six, eight, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, and 24 inches in Class 2400; six, eight, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, and 30 inches in Class 3300; 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 30, and 36 inches in Class 4000 and Class 5000.
C. 
Lengths.
(1) 
Standard lengths. The standard nominal length for asbestos-cement sewer pipe shall be 10 feet and/or 13 feet in sizes six and eight inches in Class 1500, and 13 feet in all other sizes and classes. A maximum of 10% of the total footage of any one size and class for any one order may be furnished, at the manufacturer's option, in pipe lengths shorter than 13 feet but not less than seven feet. These short lengths shall be termed random lengths.
(2) 
Short lengths. Short lengths ordered for use in making rigid connections to fittings or structures shall not exceed six feet, six inches.
D. 
Couplings. One ring-tite coupling shall be furnished with each standard, random, and short length of pipe. It shall consist of an asbestos-cement sleeve and two rubber rings, and shall be suitable in size and design for the pipe with which it is used.
E. 
Materials.
(1) 
Pipe and ring-tite couplings. Asbestos-cement sewer pipe and ring-tite couplings shall be composed of an intimate mixture of portland cement and asbestos fiber with the addition of curing agents, and shall be free from organic substances.
(2) 
Ring-tite coupling rubber rings. The rubber-ring gaskets shall consist of a molded and vulcanized rubber compound.
A. 
Pipe.
(1) 
Description. Asbestos-cement sewer pipe shall conform to the dimensions and tolerances given in Table I following. Each pipe shall be properly machined on each end so as to facilitate joining the pipe sections without damage or displacing the gasket and to automatically provide a definite end separation of pipes in each coupling assembly. The pipe ends shall also be compatible with the coupling so as to provide confinement of the rubber rings.

(2) 
Hydrostatic test. Each standard, random and short length of asbestos-cement sewer pipe shall be subjected to an internal pressure of 50 pounds as described in § A385-43B(2). While under this pressure, each section shall be inspected for general soundness. Pipes evidencing leakage or seepage through the pipe wall shall be rejected.
(3) 
Flexural strength. Each length of asbestos-cement sewer pipe in six-inch and eight-inch sizes in Classes 1500, 2400, and 3300 shall have sufficient strength to withstand, without failure, the total leads described in Table II when tested by methods described in § A385-43B(3).

Crushing strength. Asbestos-cement pipe shall have the crushing strength listed in Table III for each respective size.
B. 
Couplings, dimensions and tolerances. The inner surface of each ring-tite coupling sleeve shall be machined with gasket-retaining grooves, so that when the joint is assembled the gasket shall be compressed to form a tight seal and any movement of the pipe cannot displace the gasket. Each coupling shall conform to the dimensions and tolerances listed in Table I.

Rubber rings, dimensions and tolerances. Rubber-ring gaskets shall conform to the dimensions and tolerances as given in Table IV.

D. 
Chemical requirements. The alkalinity of asbestos-cement pipe and ring-tite coupling sleeves shall be not more than 60 when expressed as milligrams of KOH per gram of sample when tested in accordance with the method described in § A385-43E.
A. 
General. All material furnished under this specification shall be inspected and tested in a normal air-dry condition prior to shipment for conformance to the requirements stated in previous sections. When requested on his order, the purchaser may witness inspection and test procedures at his own expense. In lieu of this, he may request on his order that the manufacturer submit a certificate certifying that the product meets the requirements of this article.
B. 
Pipe.
(1) 
Inspection. Before shipment, each pipe shall be inspected by the manufacturer for compliance with the dimensions and tolerances specified in § A385-42A(1).
(2) 
Hydrostatic test. Before shipment, each standard, random, and short length of pipe shall be tested by placing it in a hydrostatic pressure testing machine with gaskets which seal the ends of the pipe. All air shall be expelled and the pressure increased to 50 pounds and maintained for five seconds.
(3) 
Flexural test. Before shipment, each standard length of pipe in sizes of six and eight inches shall be tested in flexure by the manufacturer for compliance with the flexure strength requirements specified in § A385-42A(3). The length of pipe shall be supported on a standard flexure testing machine with supports nine feet apart for ten-foot lengths and 12 feet apart for thirteen-foot lengths. The total load shall be divided equally and applied at the third points of the span at a minimum rate of at least 500 pounds per second, and shall be maintained for five seconds.
(4) 
Crushing test. Before shipment, crushing tests shall be conducted by the manufacturer. The test shall be performed in the following manner: Pipe lengths, from which crushing samples are to be cut, shall be selected at the rate of one out of every 50 lengths of each size and class of pipe which have passed both the hydrostatic and flexure tests. From each length, one unmachined sample of pipe one foot long shall be cut and tested in crushing by the ASTM three-edge bearing method. This sample shall not fail until the total applied load exceeds the tabular value given in Table III for the size and class of pipe being tested. The load shall be applied at a uniform rate of approximately 2,000 pounds per minute. If any sample fails to meet the crushing strength requirements specified in § A385-42A(4), one sample from each of two additional pipe lengths of the same size and class, manufactured during the same shift as that of the sample which failed, shall be tested. Failure of one of these additional samples to meet the crushing strength requirements shall be cause for rejection of the entire production of that size and class manufactured during the same shift as the test sample.
C. 
Couplings, inspection. Before shipment, each coupling shall be inspected by the manufacturer for compliance with the dimensions and tolerances specified in § A385-42B.
D. 
Rubber rings.
(1) 
Inspection. Before shipment, rubber-ring gaskets shall be inspected by the manufacturer for compliance with the dimensions and tolerances specified in § A385-42B.
(2) 
Tensile strength test. Rubber rings shall be stretched and subjected to a visual inspection while in the stretched position.
E. 
Alkalinity test. The alkalinity test shall be conducted by the manufacturer when requested by the purchaser of his order. When so requested, the test shall be conducted at the purchaser's expense and in the following manner: Representative samples of pipe or sleeves shall be selected and ground so that they completely pass a twenty-mesh sieve. They shall be dried at 105° C. for two hours in the absence of CO2 and cooled in a desiccator. A one-gram sample shall then be placed in a four-ounce sample bottle with 100 cubic centimeters of cold distilled water. The bottle shall then be shaken vigorously for five seconds at hourly intervals during an eight-hour working day and allowed to stand the remainder of 24 hours. The residue shall then be filtered and washed with three portions of 25 cubic centimeters each of cold distilled water. The filtrate and washings shall then be combined and titrated with N/10 HC1, using methyl orange indicator. A titration blank shall be prepared for use as a control in measuring the end point. The net alkalinity shall be calculated as milligrams of KOH per gram of sample, and shall not be more than that specified in § A385-42D.
A. 
Pipe. Each standard, random, and short length of pipe shall be marked by the manufacturer's name, the trade name, size class, the word "nonpressure," and the date of manufacture.
B. 
Couplings. Each ring-tite coupling shall be marked by the manufacturer with the manufacturer's initials and the size and class of pipe with which it shall be used.
General. Asbestos-cement sewer pipe and ring-tite couplings shall be prepared for standard commercial shipment so as to assure acceptance by common or other carriers.
A. 
General. When purchasing asbestos-cement sewer pipe under these specifications, the purchaser shall supplement them with the specific requirements, for each order of pipe, in the following subsections.
B. 
Laying length.
(1) 
The purchaser shall state the total laying length of each size and class of pipe required.
(2) 
Short lengths. The purchaser shall state the total laying length which shall be required for making connections to manholes and other rigid structures.
C. 
Inspection and tests. When the purchaser wishes to witness the inspection and tests conducted by the manufacturer, he shall so state on his order so that the manufacturer can notify the purchaser in ample time. All expense incidental to this inspection shall be assumed by the purchaser.
(1) 
Alkalinity test. When the purchaser requires that the alkalinity test be conducted, he shall so state on his order.
(2) 
Certificate of tests. When the purchaser requires a certificate of tests in lieu of witnessing the inspection and test procedures, he shall so state on his order.
A. 
The manufacturer agrees to save harmless the purchaser, his officers, and agents from all damages and claims arising from the infringement or alleged infringement of any patented right for any materials covered by this specification, and shall without cost or expense to the purchaser, his officers, or agents defend any suit or suits which may be brought against the purchaser by reason of actual or alleged infringement.
B. 
The manufacturer also agrees to state in his bid that the materials covered by this specification do not infringe on any patent or patent rights.
