All buildings now erected or hereafter to be built within the Township
of Lower Makefield shall be numbered as hereinafter provided.
The Township Engineer, in consultation with the Township Manager and
Township Police Chief, shall be responsible for determining the correct numbers
for buildings located along the streets and roadways of the township, which
said assignment shall be based on the Lower Makefield Township Building Number
and Grid System. The Township Manager, after the designation of the number
by the Township Engineer, shall furnish the correct number to the owner of
any building requesting the number.
Numbering of the buildings shall be supervised by the township, but
at the sole cost and expense of the property owner.
It shall be the duty of the owner of each and every property within
the Township of Lower Makefield to affix to each building located on said
property the correct number for that building as determined by the Township
Engineer, as provided, within ten (10) days after notice by the Township Manager
to do so. Building numbers shall be not less than three (3) inches in height
and shall be so placed upon the building as to be easily visible and identifiable
from the street upon which the building is located. In addition to the placement
of the number on the building, the owner may, in lieu thereof, place the number
on the mailbox or on a sign or other device located in the front lawn area
of the building subject to the approval of the township. The obligation of
the property owner to number buildings shall not require the numbering of
outbuildings or accessory buildings to the main structure located on each
parcel of real property. Property owners shall be required to complete the
initial numbering of all buildings within six (6) months of the enactment
of this chapter and thereafter within ten (10) days after notice by the Township
Manager to do so.
Any owner who violates any provision of this chapter, shall be liable,
upon conviction thereof before a District Justice, to a fine or penalty not
exceeding six hundred dollars ($600.) for each and every offense, together
with the costs thereof and reasonable attorney's fees. If the defendant
neither pays nor timely appeals the judgment, the township may enforce the
judgment pursuant to the applicable rules of civil procedure. It shall be
considered a separate offense for each day that the owner fails to comply
with the provisions of this chapter.
