Resolve by this Assembly, that license and authority
be and the same is hereby granted to George Lord of East Haddam and
Eber Rutly of Haddam, their heirs, executors, and assigns, to have,
use and keep a ferry across the Connecticut River from East Haddam
landing to Haddam, at the place where the same has been usually kept
by said Lord and Rutly; and license and authority is hereby granted
to said Lord and Rutly, their heirs, executors and assigns, to take
and receive all the emoluments, profits, and fare which may arise
from the transportation of said passengers and other things across
said river by said ferry to the sole use and benefit of them, the
said Lord and Rutly, their heirs, executors and assigns, during the
pleasure of this Assembly, and subject to such alterations and regulations
as this Assembly may in future adopt.
And the said Lord and Rutly, their heirs, executors
and assigns, shall at all times during the continuance of this grant
keep a sufficient and suitable boat or boats in good repair for the
purpose of transporting passengers, horses, carriages, and everything
proper and necessary to be transported in ferry boats across said
river, and shall procure and keep in constant readiness a sufficient
number of men as circumstances may require to manage said boat or
boats in transporting passengers and whatever else may be necessary
to be transported as aforesaid.
And the fare of such ferry shall be and remain
the same as is now established by law.
Be it enacted by the Governor and Council and
House of Representatives in General Court Assemble, that the fare
of the ferry near Haddam Island shall be as follows, viz: for each
man, horse, and load, eight (8 c) cents, for each footman, three (3
c) cents, for each lead horse, five (5 c) cents, for each ox or other
neat kine, eight (8 c) cents, for each sheep, swine, or goat, one
(1c)cent; and the fare for every two-wheeled carriage with one man
and draft horse shall be double, and for every four-wheeled carriage,
one man and draft horse, treble, the fare for a man, horse and load,
as above stated and for every additional person or horse, or other
beast, the same as above.
Upon petition of Calvin Brainard and others
Resolve by this Assembly, that the memorialists
have license and authority and license and authority is hereby granted
unto said memorialists to use and keep a ferry at the place above
mentioned, and to take and receive all the emoluments, profits, and
fare which may arise from the transportation of passengers and of
any and everything necessary to be transported across said ferry for
and during the space of fifteen (15) years from the rising of this
assembly, and after the expiration of the said fifteen (15) years,
during the pleasure of this assembly.
Resolve by this assembly, that Hezekiah S. Brainard
and Oliver P. Smith have license and authority and license and authority
is hereby granted unto said Hezekiah S. Brainard and Oliver P. Smith,
to use and keep a ferry at the place above mentioned, and to take
and receive all the emoluments, profits and fare which may arise from
the transportation of passengers, and of any and everything necessary
to be transported across said ferry, during the pleasure of the General
Assembly: Provided, that the Town of Haddam may, be a major vote of
the Electors of said town, in Town Meeting legally assembled, assume
the control and ownership of said ferry.
Resolve, that the fares of the above-named ferry
shall be, for each footman, six (6 c) cents; for each man, horse and
load, twelve (12 c) cents; for each lead horse, ten (10 c) cents;
for each ox and other neat kine, twelve (12 c) cents; for each sheep
or swine, two (2 c) cents; and for every cart, carriage, wagon, sled,
or sleigh, drawn by two beast, with one person, treble the fare for
man, horse and load; and for every additional person or beast, the
same as herein for each of them respectively stated.
Resolved by this Assembly:
That Frederick Steen, with his heirs and assigns,
is hereby authorized and empowered to establish, operate, and maintain
a foot ferry across the Connecticut River between Haddam and Haddam
Neck, with suitable boats, skiffs, and tools for the careful transportation
of passengers and property across said river.
Said Ferry, when established, shall be under
the same rules and regulations as other ferries now established by
law.
The tolls on said ferry shall be ten cents a
person for transportation either way.
