The buildings commissioner shall appoint, as soon as convenient in the month of January after the beginning of his term of office, an inspector of petroleum. Said inspector shall be under the supervision of the buildings commissioner.

The inspector of petroleum shall serve for a term of two years from the third Monday in January in the year of his appointment and until his successor shall be duly appointed and qualified.

The inspector of petroleum shall keep a record of all petroleum and the products thereof, including fuel oil, which he inspects, and he shall also keep a record of the fees received by him for and on account of the city, and of the persons who paid them. The buildings commissioner shall annually make a report of the transactions of inspector of petroleum to the mayor and city council.

The inspector of petroleum, for and on account of the city, shall charge for the inspection of petroleum or any of its products, including fuel oil, the sum of $0.035 for every 100 gallons inspected by him, which sum shall be paid by the persons that may require his services for such inspection. The sums so charged shall be paid into the city treasury.

The inspector of petroleum may be removed at any time for cause by the mayor, and if a vacancy in such office occurs it shall be filled at once for the unexpired term.
