The office of City Marshal is hereby abolished.

The Chief of Police shall perform all duties required of the Marshal by law.

The Mayor, with the consent and approval of the majority of the members of the Board of Aldermen, shall appoint a suitable person as Chief of Police.

A. 
The Mayor, with the consent and approval of the majority of the members of the Board of Aldermen, shall appoint a suitable person as Chief of Police.
B. 
The Chief of Police shall hold office until his or her death, resignation or removal from office.
C. 
If the Mayor fails or is unable to appoint a suitable person as Chief of Police a majority of the full Board of Aldermen may appoint a suitable person as Chief of Police.

The Chief of Police is the director of the Police Department. He/she shall have immediate and direct control of the department, subject to the supervision of the Mayor, and subject to such other rules, regulations and orders as the Mayor may prescribe. He/she shall promulgate and enforce orders, rules and regulations (consistent with this Code and with the rules, regulations and orders of the Mayor) for the efficient operation of the Police Department.

Before assuming the duties of his/her office, the Chief of Police shall execute and file a bond, approved by the Mayor, procured at the expense of the City, with sufficient security, in the amount of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). The condition of the bond shall be as follows:
The condition of the bond is that if the Chief of Police of the City of Salem, Missouri, shall faithfully discharge the duties of his/her office, account for, pay and deliver to the proper officials all money and property of the City in his/her possession, and perform all other things relating to said office required by law or by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, then the above bond shall be void; otherwise to remain in full force and effect.

A. 
The compensation of the Chief of Police shall be set by the Board of Aldermen.
B. 
In addition to the compensation as set by the Board of Aldermen, the Chief of Police shall be paid the sum of one hundred dollars ($100.00) for each regular or special meeting in which he/she attends and acts as sergeant at arms, except there shall be no additional pay for meetings which take place during normal weekday working hours. Any other officer of the Police Department that acts as sergeant at arms at a regular or special meeting in the absence of the Chief of Police shall be paid the sum of one hundred dollars ($100.00) for said meeting, except there shall be no additional pay if said officer is attending said meeting during a paid shift.
C. 
The compensation of the Chief of Police shall be payable out of the general revenue of the City in the manner directed by this Article.
D. 
All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are, to the extent of such conflict, repealed.
