The Select Board shall appoint a Chief of Police and such other
officers as it deems necessary. The Chief of Police shall from time
to time make suitable regulations governing the Police Department
and the officers thereof. The Chief of Police shall be in immediate
control of all Town property used by the Department and the police
officers whom he shall assign to their respective duties and who shall
obey his orders.
The Fire Department shall be administered by an officer known
as the Chief of the Fire Department, who shall be appointed by the Select
Board subject to the terms of a written contract. Such contract shall
provide for automatic renewal unless, after a public hearing, the
Select Board shall vote not to renew said contract. The Chief shall
receive such salary as determined by the Select Board, at no time
to exceed the amount annually appropriated therefor. The Chief may
be removed for cause by the Select Board at any time after a public
hearing. All employees, equipment, operation and procedures of the
Department shall be under the direction of the Chief, subject to the
General Laws, bylaws and collective bargaining agreements. The Chief
of the Fire Department shall act as Forest Warden and shall be authorized
to appoint deputy wardens and fix compensation therefor, subject to
the approval of the Select Board.
