[HISTORY: Adopted by the Town Meeting of the Town of Swansea as Ch. 2, Art. II, Div. 2, of the 1988 Revised General Bylaws. Amendments noted where applicable.]
The board of selectmen and board of assessors shall each consist of three members. At every annual election of Town officers one member of each board shall be elected by ballot to serve for a term of three years.
The selectmen shall exercise general supervision over all matters affecting the interests or welfare of the Town.
Except as otherwise provided by law or by vote of the Town, the board of selectmen shall have the full and exclusive authority as agents of the Town to institute, prosecute, defend, compromise and settle all claims, suits and actions brought by or against the Town. No claim or action against the Town, unless reduced to the form of an execution or decree of court shall be compromised or settled by the payment of any amount in excess of $500 without a special vote of the Town.
The selectmen may appear either personally or by counsel before any committee of the legislature or board or commission to protect the interests of the Town, but are not authorized by this bylaw to commit the Town to any course of action.
The selectmen shall cause a notice of the time and place of their respective regular meetings to be conspicuously posted and maintained in three or more public places in Town.
