GENERAL REFERENCES
Streets and sidewalks — See Ch. 520.
A. 
Township-supplied uniforms must be worn during working hours only. Short pants can be worn only with the approval of management during the warm months.
B. 
Safety shoes supplied by Burlington Township shall be worn during working hours only.
C. 
Employees must be trained by qualified personnel, prior to using any Township power equipment.
D. 
Seat belts must be worn at all times.
E. 
The Burlington Township Safety Rules and Regulations, as specifically set forth in a booklet which is on file with the Office of the Township Clerk, which booklet reflects that the said rules and regulations, as revised October 17, 2000, are hereby adopted as work rules within the Public Works Department of the Township of Burlington.
A. 
Treatment of the wells with acid.
(1) 
Always wear eye protection (goggles or full face mask).
(2) 
Use a rubber apron.
(3) 
Use rubber gloves.

Make sure the room is ventilated when treating the well with acid.

Always have fresh water on hand for flushing purposes.

Working with liquid chlorine.

Generator maintenance.

Always wear ear protection if generator is running during inspection.

Meter cleaning.

When using a meter cleaner, wear rubber gloves at all times, even if just washing off glassware.

Safety equipment for water main breaks, sewer main breaks or repairs, storm sewer repairs and any holes over four feet deep. (Note: Prior to any excavation, notify the underground utilities by calling 1-800-272-1000.)

Pumps, if needed.

Shoring the hole, also make sure the hole is the right size.
(3) 
Working in holes over four feet deep:
(a) 
Helmets.
(b) 
Shoring or metal box.
(c) 
Proper digging procedures (depth x angle).

Ladder for a way out of the hole if it is deep.

If using a pipe saw in the hole, wear goggles and/or a face mask at all times.

During water main and hydrant repairs, make sure there is a way to shut the water off with the valves in case of an emergency.

Set cones and "Men Working" signs up on the job site.

When working on a hydrant, make sure the chains and all equipment are in good shape and hooked up properly in order to lift the hydrant out of the hole and return it when done.
(9) 
Make sure you have a certified man on the backhoe when doing the job.
(10) 
A meter to check for gases and lack of oxygen.
(11) 
Additional lighting for night work.
(12) 
Use flagmen, if traffic control is needed.
(13) 
If opening needs to be left open overnight, be certain barricades are properly placed and the opening is secured and covered.

A flagman must be used behind the loader or backhoe when clearing any intersection.

When using the sander, the operator must use caution when near pedestrians.

Good judgment should be used concerning the speed of the plow truck. The plow should travel fast enough to move the snow but not fast enough to create a hazard to traffic or pedestrians.
(5) 
If possible, snow should not be piled so high that it blocks a driver's view at an intersection.
P. 
Electrical hazards.
(1) 
When making repairs to pumps, mixers, etc., make certain that the proper breaker is turned off, locked out, and tagged.
(2) 
When changing fuses, be sure to use the proper tool for removal and replacement of the fuse.
(3) 
The Township Electrician is the only one qualified to make wiring changes or to perform any technical electrical repairs. (Note: If you have any doubts concerning electrical work, contact the Township Electrician.)
Q. 
Woodworking equipment (Sal's Garage).
(1) 
No one is permitted to use any of the power equipment in the woodshop without permission from the maintenance repairer/carpenter or the general foreman.
(2) 
Anyone needing to use the woodshop equipment must be properly trained on that piece of equipment.
(3) 
All safety precautions, such as eye protection and ear protection, must be used.
