Buildings required to have sprinkler systems. All classifications of buildings listed below, which buildings are constructed after the effective date of this chapter, shall be required to have approved sprinkler systems as hereinafter listed and defined. Such systems shall be approved by the New York Board of Fire Underwriters, Factory Mutual, National Fire Protection Association or another nationally recognized approval organization prior to installation and shall meet all prescribed standards of installation and operations.
Multiple dwellings (except enclosed closets 50 square feet or less in area and bathrooms).
Retail and personal service buildings (mercantile).
Amusement park buildings.
Coliseums and stadiums.
Courtrooms and buildings.
Exhibition halls or buildings.
Indoor tennis courts or other sport courts.
Lodge halls or rooms.
Lodging and boarding houses.
Churches, synagogues and similar places of worship.
Schools, colleges and similar places of education.
Child caring institutions.
One- and two-family dwellings (except enclosed closets 50 square feet or less in area and bathroom and unheated areas). Piping systems will be approved as per National Fire Protection Association Bulletin 13D-1980.
Existing buildings and occupancies, as defined below, which do not contain sprinkler systems, as defined herein, shall be required to comply with this section within 60 months from effective date of this chapter. For purposes of compliance, owners of buildings in this category shall be required to enter into a valid contract for such installation within 36 months of the effective date of this chapter and shall be required to complete the sprinkler installation within the next twenty-four-month period.
Building permits. No building permit shall be issued for the construction of any building, structure or portion thereof unless compliance is met, as defined in Subsection A above.
Certificates of occupancy. No certificate of occupancy shall be issued for occupancy or use of any building, structure or portion thereof required to have a sprinkler system, as defined in Subsection A above, unless such system is installed, inspected, tested and approved.
Additional requirements. Buildings more than two stories in height, in addition to meeting the sprinkler requirements as hereinbefore defined, shall conform to the following:
