The Mayor and Council shall have authority to promulgate rules and regulations with respect to the Fire Department. Appointments that are made for chief of the Fire Department must be recommended to the Fire Commissioner and Public Safety Director for Mayor and Council approval at the January reorganization meeting.
To be a firefighter of the Hamburg Fire Department, a member must either reside or work within the Borough of Hamburg limits for at least one year prior to appointment. Proof of residency or employment must be submitted. Once exempt or Life Member Status is achieved the previous requirement is waived. A life member who is not exempt and lives out of town would be considered an inactive member. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Chief must be a resident of the Borough of Hamburg during his/ her tenure of office.
First Aid life members can remain on the Fire Department active roster if they are EMTs that continue their certifications and live in Hamburg. EMTs that no longer have their certifications shall remain as inactive life members. The Public Safety Director shall manage the Ambulance Squad Paid Services.
