Any backflow of nonpotable water, other liquids or
foreign materials into public water systems is prohibited. The public
water supply shall be protected against cross-connections by backflow
preventors as usually found in commercial and industrial establishments
and not residential units. Initially, the Town, through a certified
contractor, shall conduct an initial inspection to determine the need
for backflow preventors and to test each installed backflow prevention
device pursuant to 310 CMR 22.22. Independent contractors will charge
their own fees and collect such DPW-approved fees directly from the
customer.
After installation of a backflow prevention device(s),
the Town or a certified contractor or licensed plumber shall semiannually
test and inspect all backflow preventors, at the owner's expense,
to ensure continuous satisfactory operation. The fee for private,
certified and/or licensed contractors or plumbers shall be established
between concerned parties, excluding the Town. Repair and testing
shall be in compliance with the State Department of Environmental
Protection Regulations, 310 CMR 22.22. Failure to provide evidence
of a valid semiannual inspection prior to July 1 and January 1 of
each year will result in the disconnection of water services until
a valid inspection report is provided.
