Under direction, the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds shall supervise the cleaning and maintenance of public buildings ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of all grounds within a jurisdiction; and do other related duties as required.
The Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds supervises work involved in the cleaning/maintenance of desks, chairs, rugs, lighting fixtures, windows, and other furniture or fixtures; supervises maintenance and care of all grounds within a jurisdiction; supervises the sweeping, washing, sanding, and waxing of floors; supervises the operation of elevators; supervises the storage of office equipment/supplies; requisitions materials/supplies; gives assignments and instructions to assigned employees; prepares reports; supervises the establishment of records and files; will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. The examples of work are for illustrative purposes only. All duties listed may not be performed, and conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.
A. 
Experience. Three years of experience in work involving the inspection, cleaning and maintenance of buildings and/or in the care and maintenance of large tracts of grounds, one year of which shall have been in supervisory capacity, is required.
B. 
License. The Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
C. 
Knowledge and abilities.
(1) 
Knowledge of problems, procedures, and methods used in inspecting, analyzing, and planning the cleaning and maintenance work to be done.
(2) 
Knowledge of problems involved in establishing, maintaining, and developing effective work procedures.
(3) 
Knowledge of varied types of equipment/materials needed to clean/maintain a building.
(4) 
Knowledge of methods used in requisitioning equipment/materials.
(5) 
Knowledge of procedures for establishing/maintaining records.
(6) 
Ability to analyze cleaning and maintenance problems.
(7) 
Ability to give assignments and instructions to subordinates.
(8) 
Ability to handle complaints tactfully/pleasantly and take necessary remedial action.
(9) 
Ability to make periodic inspections to determine efficiency of subordinates.
(10) 
Ability to prepare reports.
(11) 
Ability to supervise the establishment/maintenance of records and files.
(12) 
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
(13) 
Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
