The Communications Operator shall:
A. 
Under direction, in a centralized communication center, receive and transmit police and other emergency alarms; receive telephone requests for police or other emergency assistance and transmit the same to appropriate personnel; operate a variety of communications equipment; and do related work as required.
B. 
Receive telephone complaints and requests for police and other emergency assistance from the public; ascertain proper addresses and information; immediately determine the nature of the call and initiate action by relaying messages and dispatching police and/or other emergency vehicles in response to complaints or requests for assistance; operate radio transmitters and receivers, tape recorders, telephone switchboard, tabulator card registers, security controls and visual displays and other communication equipment; receive and transmit teletype messages; prepare and maintain a variety of records; monitor state, county and municipal police radios; provide information to the general public and employees; and inspect circuit indicator panels to ascertain during periods of stress and emergency in order to avoid unnecessary delays by responding emergency vehicles.
Requirements of this position shall include:
A. 
The ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
B. 
Some knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures of the Federal Communication Commission and the proper methods for operating a centralized communication system.
C. 
The ability to act courteously and effectively with people in emergency or stress situations while remaining calm and decisive, to receive and transmit information accurately and clearly and to maintain necessary records and files.
D. 
Good health and freedom from disabling physical and mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or others.
E. 
The satisfactory completion of a background investigation in which nothing of a detrimental or criminal nature affecting employment has been disclosed.
F. 
One year of experience in work involving the receiving, sending and relaying of teletype messages and radio communications and the receiving, relaying and recording of complaints and requests for assistance and which shall have included familiarity with teletype and computer-oriented equipment.
G. 
Some knowledge of typing.
H. 
Graduation from high school or vocational high school or possession of an approved high school equivalency certificate.
I. 
Successful completion of training and probation.
