There shall be a Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer and an Assistant Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer of the City, whose responsibilities and duties shall be to enforce the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance[1] of the City, as the same shall be amended from time to time, in accordance with the administrative rules established or to be established by the Zoning Commission, and to enforce regulations of the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency and carry out the purposes of Article XI.

Commencing on July 1, 2000, and quadrenially thereafter, the Mayor of the City is authorized to appoint a Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer, and an Assistant Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer, subject to the approval of the Board of Aldermen.
The term of office of such Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer and Assistant Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer shall be for four years.
The Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer and the Assistant Zoning Enforcement/Inland Wetlands Compliance Officer shall receive such salaries as shall be duly established by the Board of Aldermen.
The Zoning Enforcement Officer and the Assistant Zoning Enforcement Officer are authorized to inspect any land, building or other structure as may be reasonably necessary to determine compliance with the Zoning Ordinance[1] of the City.

The Zoning Enforcement Officer is authorized to issue a stop-work order if, in his judgment, the use of land, buildings or other structures or the construction, reconstruction, enlargement, extension, moving or structural alteration of a building or other structure is not being carried out in compliance with the regulations of the Zoning Ordinance.[1] He shall withdraw such order when he determines that there is compliance with the Zoning Ordinance, or when requested to do so by the Zoning Commission or the Zoning Board of Appeals. The Zoning Enforcement Officer, when authorized by the Zoning Commission, may order abatement of any violation of' the Zoning Ordinance.

Any person aggrieved by any action of the Zoning Enforcement Officer may appeal to the Board of Zoning Appeals in the manner prescribed by law.
