Duration of probation. Every person promoted or appointed
to a position shall be required to complete successfully a probationary
period, which shall be of sufficient length to enable the department
head to observe the employee's ability to perform the various principal
duties pertaining to the position. The probationary period shall begin
immediately upon original appointment or promotion and normally continue
for a period of six months. The probationary period may be extended
for another three months if the department head thinks a longer working
test period is necessary in order to determine whether the employee
should be retained in the position. Throughout the probationary period,
the department head will observe the employee's performance.
