No person, firm, or corporation shall erect, set up, or keep upon or in front of any building or place of business any sign, signboard or inscription of any kind (either temporary or permanent), any part of which shall project or extend into, upon, or over the limits of any sidewalk, street or highway, without a license from the Board of License Commissioners.
This chapter shall apply exclusively to outdoor advertising within public view of any sidewalk, street, highway, public park or reservation or any other public land.
This chapter shall not apply to signs or other devices controlled under the provisions of MGL c. 85, §§ 1, 2, and 8, or any other statute, or any other ordinance of the Town of Greenfield, including the Zoning Ordinance of the Town of Greenfield, or to any other devices on the rolling stock, stations or structures of or used by common carriers. Advertising devices on bridges, viaducts or abutments thereof are prohibited. This chapter shall not apply to signs or other devices which advertise or indicate either the person, firm, or corporation occupying the premises in question or the business transacted thereon, or which advertise the property itself or any parts thereof as "for sale" or "to let," "to rent" or "to lease" and shall contain no other advertising matter.
