Definitions. Unless the context specifically indicates otherwise,
the meaning of terms used in this chapter shall be as follows:
ASTM
American Society for Testing and Materials.
BOD (denoting "biochemical oxygen demand")
The quantity of oxygen utilized in the biochemical oxidation
of organic matter under standard laboratory procedure in five days
at 20° C., expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/l).
BUILDER
Any person, persons or corporation that undertakes to construct,
either under contract or for resale, any habitable building.
BUILDING SEWER DRAIN
That part of the lowest horizontal piping of a drainage system
which receives the discharge from soil, waste and other drainage pipes
inside the walls of the building and conveys it to the building sewer
lateral, beginning five feet outside the inner face of the building
wall.
BUILDING SEWER LATERAL
The extension from the building sewer drain to the public
sewer or other place of disposal.
CONTRACTOR
Any person, firm or corporation approved by the Village Board
to do work in the Village.
DEVELOPER
Any person, persons or corporation that undertakes to construct
more than one housing unit on a given tract or land subdivision.
ENGINEER
The professional engineer retained as Village Engineer for
the Village of Canisteo.
GARBAGE
Solid wastes from the preparation, cooking and dispensing
of food and from the handling, storage and sale of produce.
LIVING UNIT
A self-contained apartment or a portion of a private dwelling
occupied by a person or persons living independent and separate from
the other occupants of the building.
MUNICIPAL LATERAL
That portion of the building sewer lateral extending from
the public sewer to the property line, said municipal lateral being
a part of the public sewer.

New York State Department of Transportation.
NATURAL OUTLET
Any outlet into a watercourse, pond, ditch, lake or other
body of surface water or groundwater.
OWNER
Any individual, firm, company, association, society, person
or group having title to real property.
PERSON
Any individual, firm, company, association, society, corporation
or group.
pH
The logarithm of the reciprocal of the concentration of hydrogen
ions in grams-ionic weights per liter of solution.
PROPERLY SHREDDED GARBAGE
The wastes from the preparation, cooking and dispensing of
food that has been shredded to such degree that all particles will
be carried freely under the flow conditions normally prevailing in
public sewers, with no particle greater than 1/2 inch in any dimension.
PROPERTY LINE
The inner sidewalk line or the actual property line on the
equivalent lateral whenever the building sewer connects to the public
sewer in a public street and shall mean the edge of a sewer right-of-way
in those instances where the building sewer connects to the public
sewer in a right-of-way.
PUBLIC SEWER
A sanitary sewer within the street or highway limits, easements
or other rights-of-way, which is under the control of the Village.
SANITARY SEWER
A sewer which transports sewage and to which stormwater,
surface water, and ground water are not admitted.
SEWAGE
A combination of the water-carried wastes from residences,
business buildings, institutions and industrial establishments.
SEWAGE WORKS
All facilities for collecting, pumping, treating and disposing
of sewage.
SEWER
A pipe or conduit for transporting sewage.
STORM SEWER or STORM DRAIN
A pipe or conduit which transports stormwater, surface water
and drainage, but excludes sewage and industrial wastes.
SUPERINTENDENT
The Superintendent of Public Works of the Village of Canisteo
or his authorized deputy, agent or representative.
SUSPENDED SOLIDS
Solids that either float on the surface of or are in suspension
in water, sewage or other liquids and which are removable by laboratory
filtering.
VILLAGE
The Village of Canisteo, New York.
WATERCOURSE
A channel in which a flow of water occurs, either continuously
or intermittently.
