Smoke detectors capable of sensing visible or
invisible products of combustion shall be installed in all commercial
and industrial buildings, and in all public buildings, and buildings
open to the public. The smoke detectors shall be 110 volt hardwire
with a battery backup and shall be of a type approved by a recognized
independent testing laboratory, and, when activated, shall provide
an alarm suitable to warn occupants of the building in which the alarm
is installed. Notwithstanding the foregoing, battery operated smoke
detectors currently operable in existing structures covered by this
chapter will be permitted provided they are maintained in proper working
order pursuant to the applicable Fire Department requirements.
All floors, including the basement, of each
building covered by this chapter shall have at least one smoke detector
of the type described in this chapter.
Any smoke detector installed pursuant to the
terms of this chapter shall be inspected by the Township Electrical
Inspector at the time of installation. The smoke detectors are subject
to periodic inspections by the Grosse Ile Fire Chief or his designee.
If the provisions of this chapter are in conflict
in any particular factual situation with the provisions of the BOCA
National Building Code (as adopted by Grosse Ile Township) concerning smoke detectors, then the provisions of the
BOCA National Building Code shall prevail.
