In the event of an emergency, any police officer of the Township of Lopatcong, the Township of Greenwich, Town of Phillipsburg or Township of Holland, or of the New Jersey State Police, acting in the performance of their duty, may request the Pohatcong Township Chief of Police or any other officer on duty for mutual aid and assistance within the Townships of Greenwich and Lopatcong, the Town of Phillipsburg, the Borough of Alpha (as long as serviced by the Town of Phillipsburg), and the Township of Holland.

Police of this Township may, upon such request in the event of emergency, respond to the request and render police assistance in the Townships of Greenwich, Lopatcong and Holland, the Town of Phillipsburg and the Borough of Alpha. Police of this Township shall not be obligated to respond to such request for assistance and shall not respond if, in their judgment and discretion, responding would jeopardize public safety in this Township. Any police officer of Pohatcong Township responding to such request and rendering police assistance:
A. 
Shall, while engaged in such assistance, have such rights and immunities as he may otherwise enjoy in the performance of his normal duties in this Township.
B. 
Shall, if he suffers a casualty or death while engaged in such assistance, be entitled to all salary, pension rights, worker's compensation and other benefits to which such officer would be entitled if such casualty or death occurred in the performance of his normal duties for the Township of Pohatcong.

This article shall take effect with respect to each municipality upon its adoption of a reciprocal ordinance and mutual aid/intermunicipal agreement incorporating the terms of this article and any other terms and conditions mutually agreed upon by the respective municipalities; provided, however, that any and all existing mutual aid agreements with any municipality as of the effective date of this article are hereby ratified.
