[HISTORY: Adopted by the Township Committee of the Township of Barnegat 11-3-80 as Ord. No. 1980-37. Amendments noted where applicable.]
There is hereby created within the Township of Barnegat volunteer auxiliary police. The Township Committee may appoint said auxiliary policemen for terms not exceeding one (1) year and revoke such appointment without cause or hearing. Said auxiliary police shall be under the control and supervision of the Chief of Police of the Township of Barnegat.
A. 
No person shall be appointed as a member of the auxiliary police unless:
(1) 
He is a citizen of the United States.
(2) 
He is able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently.
(3) 
He is sound in body and of good health.
(4) 
He is of good moral character.
(5) 
He has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
B. 
No member of the auxiliary police shall be a member of the regular police force of the Township of Barnegat.
C. 
No auxiliary policeman shall carry or be issued firearms or other similar weapons.
D. 
Every auxiliary policeman shall have his fingerprints taken, and they shall be filed with the Division of State Police and with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
E. 
Said auxiliary policeman shall comply with the rules and regulations applicable to the conduct and decorum of regular policemen within the municipality.
F. 
Before any such appointment as auxiliary policeman is made, the Chief of Police of the Township of Barnegat shall ascertain the eligibility and qualifications of the applicant and make a report thereon to the governing body.
The duties of the auxiliary police shall include but not be limited to service to the township with regard to special events or functions and traffic control.
While on duty, all auxiliary police officers shall be uniformed in a manner which is clearly distinctive from that of a regular police officer within the Township of Barnegat. Additionally, said volunteer auxiliary police officer shall wear a badge at all times while on duty indicating membership in the auxiliary police of the Township of Barnegat.
This ordinance repeals any inconsistent ordinance or ordinances or part or parts thereof.
In the event that any provision of this ordinance shall be found to be invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
This ordinance shall become effective immediately upon final passage and publication as required by law.
