No person shall discharge, or cause to be discharged, any firearm as defined in Section 53a-3(19) of the Connecticut Penal Code within 500 feet of any building used for human habitation or the keeping of animals without the permission of the owner or resident of such building.
Section 228-1 shall not apply to the following:
A. 
Peace officers as defined in Section 53a-3(9) of the Connecticut Penal Code and Animal Control Officers, when acting in the performance of their duties.
B. 
Persons acting to protect themselves, others or domestic animals when such persons or animals are being attacked by wild animals.
C. 
Persons acting in compliance with C.G.S. § 22-358 while protecting themselves or domestic animals from attack by dogs or cats.
D. 
Members of the military acting under orders of a military officer on the occasion of military exercises or parades.
Any person violating § 228-1 shall be fined $200.
