There is hereby created the office of Deputy Chief of the Thornton Police Department.

The Village President shall appoint, suspend, demote, remove or discharge the Deputy Chief of Police of the Village with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees.

The Deputy Chief of Police shall have the following duties and responsibilities:
A. 
Discharge all duties imposed upon him by law and the ordinances of the Village.
B. 
Be responsible for the faithful and efficient conduct of the operation of the Department of Police.
C. 
Be responsible for the enforcement and maintenance of law and order.
D. 
Assist the Chief of Police as needed or directed by the Chief of Police.

A. 
Appointment as Deputy Chief; Resume prior status. If any member of the Police Department, having a rank therein under the classified service of the Village or other tenure of office, may be appointed Deputy Chief, then upon the expiration of his term as Deputy Chief of Police, he shall resume his status and rank held prior to his appointment as Deputy Chief.
B. 
Rank. The Chief of Police shall be the head of the Department of Police and shall have command of and supervision over all officers and members thereof. Following him in rank shall be the Deputy Chief, the sergeants and police officers, in order of seniority in each group. There shall be a sufficient number of police sergeants, proportioned to the number of police officers, as may be provided for by the President and Board of Trustees.
