[Adopted 3-2-2004 by Bylaw No. 2004-1]
In accordance with RSA 47:17, By-Laws and Ordinances, Section VII, Use of Public Ways, and Section VIII, Traffic Devices and Signals, RSA 265:60, Basic Rule and Maximum Limits, Subsection II-a, and as warranted in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Part 7, Traffic Controls for School Areas, the following school zone posting procedure is promulgated, meaning and intending to provide guidance for the establishment of school zones on the Town-maintained road system.
School zones shall only be established for schools which meet the following:
A. 
School zones will only be established for schools that have at least two grade levels between kindergarten and grade 12.
B. 
Schools must be listed in the NH Department of Education Directory.
C. 
NH approved nonpublic schools must enroll a minimum of 75 students and/or generate a minimum of 100 turns in/out of the school during peak hours, as determined by a traffic study that shall be provided by the school. The driveway permit for the facility must reflect the current usage of the property.
D. 
School zones will not be established for colleges.
E. 
Schools that currently do not meet this guideline but have established school zones shall have the school zones traffic control devices removed when the devices are no longer serviceable upon notification to the school.
F. 
The property line of the school shall be used to determined measurement for sign locations.
School speed limits will only be established for schools that require student pedestrians to cross the Town roadway to attend regular sessions and/or have significant school bus activity, upon written request from school officials with support from Selectmen. School speed limits will only be considered for schools whose usable property abuts the Town roadway.
School zone signs shall meet the following:
A. 
Fluorescent yellow green background color shall be used for school zone warning signs, supplemental warning plaques, and the "SCHOOL" portion of the S4-1 sign.
B. 
Standard minimum-sized signs shall be used as follows:
(1) 
Time plaque (S4 – 1): 24 inches by 10 inches.
(2) 
School (S4 – 1): 24 inches by eight inches.
(3) 
Speed assembly (R2 – 1): 24 inches by 30 inches.
(4) 
End zone (S5 – 2): 24 inches by 30 inches.
