Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle
operated as a police or fire vehicle giving audible signal by siren,
exhaust whistle or bell or when such vehicle is equipped with at least
one lighted lamp displaying an oscillating, rotating or flashing beam,
or upon the immediate approach of any other authorized emergency vehicle
giving audible signal by siren, exhaust whistle or bell and when such
other vehicle is equipped with at least one lighted lamp displaying
an oscillating, rotating or flashing beam visible under normal atmospheric
conditions from a distance of 500 feet to the front of such vehicle,
the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right of way and
shall immediately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as
possible to, the right-hand edge of curb, except on "one-way" streets
where drivers shall drive as close as possible to nearest edge or
curb of the roadway clear of any intersection and shall stop and remain
in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed,
except when otherwise directed by a police officer or a fireman in
the lawful exercise of his duty as provided in this Title.
