In addition to officers or personnel otherwise provided by ordinance or law for appointment as officers or employees of the Police Department of the City of Hermann, there may also be appointed from time to time, in such numbers and at such times as the Board of Aldermen may determine by ordinance, one (1) or more Special Officers who may be appointed for temporary periods in case of extraordinary emergencies, unusual public celebrations, exhibitions, or gatherings within the City, or when for other causes the public safety may require additional police protection.

Special Officers shall possess all of the qualifications required by ordinance and law for regular officers of the Police Department during their probationary period. Said officers shall be appointed in the same manner and shall take the same oath of office as is provided by ordinance for regular officers. Special Officers shall have all of the same powers and duties as are possessed by regular officers, except that such officers shall not have the power of arrest unless certified as provided in Section 200.030(A) and the power to take bonds from persons arrested for violations of ordinances of the City; and shall be subject to suspension and removal in the same manner as regular officers. Special Officers shall receive such compensation as is set from time to time by ordinance; but shall not be eligible for overtime pay, vacation time, holidays, or sick leave.

Special Officers shall be appointed for a period limited to the duration of the emergency or other special event which required their appointment, but in no event shall the period exceed one (1) month for any one (1) occasion unless specifically extended by resolution of the Board of Alderman.
